Teacher Training | LEAP Science and Maths School
LEAP Science and Maths Schools is a nonprofit organization that provides free education to students from high-need communities in South Africa. LEAP has six schools in South Africa, and Diepsloot is their fourth. LEAP’s unique educational model focuses heavily on mathematics, science and English, and it offers extended school hours and after-school tutoring. As a result, their Grade 12 students have a 93% pass rate with more than 70% of graduates pursuing tertiary education. Prior to this project, Team4Tech partnered with LEAP Science and Maths Schools on a project in 2014.
VMware volunteers trained teachers from the LEAP school in Diepsloot, a township near Johannesburg. Diepsloot has over 300,000 residents, which makes it one of the most populated townships in South Africa. The training included project-based learning activities, an offline version of Khan Academy called KA Lite, a learning management system software called Moodle, and other software. The team also helped set up a mobile computer cart with 36 laptops, improved their school’s server, and assisted in offline software installations.
