IT Solution & Teacher Training | LEAP Science and Maths School
The VMware Good Gigs Trek team collaborated with LEAP 1 School, which is located in Langa, a township near Cape Town, South Africa. LEAP Science and Maths School is a pioneer in providing quality education to underserved youth. They believe in developing students’ character and intellect, and have a 96% Grade 12 examination pass rate (national average is 70%). They have 6 schools throughout South Africa.
The VMware's robust IT team developed a “VMware Engineer for Good Technology Solution” for LEAP 1 and all LEAP schools, which included:
• Assessment – The team provided an IT Health Check tool, documentation, and best practices to improve LEAP's IT infrastructure and network.
• Product – The team implemented an asset management tool to track all LEAP's IT infrastructure, standardized hardware, and developed backup strategy for all LEAP schools. They also introduced a library management software to the LEAP 1 librarian, and trained two learners per grade, called IT superstars, to assist teachers in technology set-up and troubleshooting.
• Service – The team delivered interactive trainings for teachers to implement technology as a tool in the classroom. This included in-depth sessions on digital literacy, Google Docs, Gmail, Earth/Maps, Chrome, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, IXL, KA Lite, and Hour of Code. The teachers used the open office sessions for 1:1 guidance. Lastly, to include the larger Langa Community, the team also offered a community technology training workshop on Saturday that covered basic search, Google tools, and job application on Indeed.com.
